Child Clothing History
Funds generated from the event are donated to the Junior League of the Emerald Coast’s Child Clothing Project. The project was launched in 1979 at which time 36 children from Okaloosa and Walton County were clothed. This year their goal is to clothe at least 325 children!
The Need
37.8% of elementary school children in Okaloosa County qualify for free or reduced price lunch, which is a total of 4686 students. 46.3% of elementary school children in Walton County qualify for free or reduced price lunch, which is a total of 1681 students.
How are the Individual Children Selected?
The JLEC trusts that the guidance counselors at the individual schools will select the children most in need of this service. This can be based on issues such as children who never have properly fitting clothing or wear the same dirty and worn clothing several times a week.
What do the Children Receive during the Trip to Target?
The children receive a complete wardrobe of 2 pairs of pants, 2 short sleeved shirts, 1 long sleeved shirt, a pair of shoes, a jacket, and a package of underwear, socks, and a bra set for young ladies. They also receive toothbrushes and toothpaste from area dentists, assorted school supplies and goodies from the JLEC. After their shipping experience, the children get lunch and drinks as well as have a variety of activities to do until they board their bus to go back to school.
As you can see this event is not only fun, fun, fun but supports such a worthy charity for children in our area. We look forward to this event each year and hope you are able to join us Saturday evening.
