There is nothing more important than jewelry. That ring of my grandmothers was purchased on her own after my grandfather died. It is a symbol of remembrance, loss, hope and a legacy that my mother now wears on her own finger.
Jewelry is more than designer names and gold content and F, VVS1. Yes, there is beauty and rarity and intrinsic value. But jewelry is also talisman, symbol and celebration. Jewelry tells our own internal story to everyone else. It is generational, and sometimes, inspirational.
Maybe weve forgotten jewelrys significance in our base to acquire the latest electronics or plan a vacation. But we dont exchange iPhones or experiences. Im not going to hand down my IPhone 6 Plus (even though it is gold) to my grandchildren. We choose precious metals and enduring gems to symbolize something greater than ourselves: promises, commitments, milestones.
My husband just gave me a beautiful moonstone pendant for my birthday. Its heavy and soothing in the hand, and if find myself reaching for it during the day. I swear it helps me think. When I looked up the gems traditional properties, if found that the Romans thought that moonstone was a channel for prophecy and a path to wisdom. Ill take all the help that I can get.
Jewelry has the power probably ancient and primordial to delight, astonish, transform, adorn, protect, transcend and possibly even heal.
If were an industry to magpies, thats OK. The sparkle is great, as long as we still see the magic.
