During National Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, McCaskill & Company is taking care of our little friends at Alaqua Animal Refuge. From now through April 21st, hope you can drop by and bring canned or pouch Pedigree food…or give a donation. All contributors of food or funds will be entered into a drawing to win a beautiful David Yurman bracelet.

The tireless efforts of Alaqua Animal Refuge are summed up in their mission statement:

Alaqua Animal Refuge believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Our private, nonprofit animal sanctuary is committed to serving the Emerald Coast as: the premier no-kill refuge, providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need; a full-service animal adoption center; and a peaceful, proactive animal welfare advocate through educational outreach and community programs.

Alaqua is a no-kill facility, and initially provided shelter to only a handful of dogs, cats and other animals while a small staff worked to find them permanent, loving homes. But the shelter has expanded in the ensuing years and now provides a place of respite for about 250 animals at any given time, including dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, horses, donkeys and a wide variety of farm animals. Since 2007, Alaqua staff and volunteers have helped find homes for more than 9,000 animals, with up to 100 adoptions completed each month.

Alaqua spends nearly $50,000 each month in operational costs, with those funds raised entirely from donations and proceeds from fund raising events. Fund raising is a continual effort, with staff and volunteers pitching in countless hours throughout the year for special events, operating membership drives and planned giving efforts and coordinating grants.
