Happy birthday October babies! October has two gorgeous birthstones; the most traditional being the opal and the other being the tourmaline. Opals are known for their one-one-of-a-kind coloring and the tourmaline is well loved for the variety of colors it can be found in.

Opals have a layered of minerals which cause the stone to reflect light so that it gives that gorgeous array of colors. Fire opals are known for their play of color with their orange-red coloring. They can come in a variety of colors, like white and blue, but also the dark black opal which is most valuable. Opals have an amazing shifting appearance as you move them, where often it will have rainbow flashes of color. McCaskill & Company has lots of designers who work in the gorgeous opal: Oscar Heyman, Pamela Froman, Gurhan, Erica Courtney, Stephen Webster, Armenta, and recently Simon G.

Tourmaline means 'mixed stone' which is fitting due to the spectrum of colors and combinations the stone can be found in. Cranberry red, hot magenta, bubblegum pink, peach and orange, canary yellow, mint, grass and forest green, ocean blue, violet are just a few of the colors you can find the stone in. It is also known for displaying multiple colors in the one stone, known as bi-color or tri-color combinations. The watermelon tourmaline is an example of the tri-color where it changes from dark pink to clear to green. Rubellite tourmaline are a specific deep bright pinkish red but should not be confused with rubies. The intense green stone is a chrome tourmaline and should not be confused with emeralds. Then there is the rare paraiba tourmaline which is a bright teal along with blue and green colors. You also have a lot of options at McCaskill & Company with the tourmaline: Gurhan, Eli Jewels, Oscar Heyman, Jean-Francois Albert, Erica Courtney, Simon G, Armenta, Marco Bicego, and Pamela Froman.
