Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January, as well as a traditional second anniversary gift for marriage. While you may recognize a deep dark red hue as traditionally garnet, this gem is actually often shades of orange, yellow, green, blue, and even purple! In fact, no other gem has such a broad spectrum and variety of colors.
The garnet has been popular throughout history and using garnets in jewelry dates back as far as 3000 BC! They were also especially fashionable in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.Garnet forms in metamorphic rock and miners extract them by first removing the soil from an area, and then chipping the rock out of the ground by hand or machine. They are found virtually all over the world including China, Argentina, Australia, Scotland, Africa, Switzerland, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States.
Our selection of jewelry made from these beautiful gemstones is as varied its colors and history. Innovative and unique designs as seen above by JFA, Erica Courtney, and Alex Sepkus all highlight this beloved and diverse gemstone.
