Although most of the gemstones that we enjoy have been known to us for centuries, there are those occasional new finds. Zultanite is one of those that is relatively new to the jewelry world, with Zultanite Gems LLC obtaining the mining permit in 2006. This intriguing color change gem shows hues from kiwi to champagne to raspberry depending upon the light source. We have enjoyed the gems in candlelight where they display a beautiful purple hue. It is easy to see how Zultanite is quickly becoming a rising star in the jewelry world – not only for the color change, but the sparkle when faceted. Zultanites are naturally brilliant and are 100% natural with no heat treatment, radiation or other enhancements.

This unique stone is exceptionally rare and only mined in one source! – a remote mountain area in Anatolia, Turkey. Zultanite is mined by hand with pick-axes and chisels at an elevation of 7000 feet. The gem was named by Murat Akgun in honor of the 36 sultans who ruled the Ottoman Empire in the region in the late 13th century.

If you are one of the lucky ones to own a Zultanite, be sure that it is not cleaned in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, but rather soapy water and a soft brush. Sudden temperature changes should also be avoided. It is considered a durable stone and suitable for daily wear.

Over the last few years one of our very favorite designers, Erica Courtney, has intrigued us with mesmerizing Zultanite designs. Please drop by McCaskill & Company so that you too can see the incredible color change characteristics of this exotic gem. We are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 until 5:30 – between Destin and Sandestin.
