At McCaskill & Company, we love to show our customers jewels they may not have encountered before. One of Bill Campbell's very favorites gems is Paraiba Tourmaline. He says: "No picture can do a Paraiba Tourmaline justice. It is the most magical stone that you can image!"

This gemstone is precious worldwide and very rare. Discovered in the 1980s, this gem was only found in Brazil until in 2001, when it was also mined in Nigeria. Paraiba Tourmaline is comprised of copper, iron, magnesium, and lithium. An interesting fact about these gems is when warmed up, they’re electrically charged and can act like a natural magnet!

As you can see in these pieces by Erica Courtney , Pamela Froman, and Oscar Heyman, once cut, Paraiba Tourmaline seems to literally glow from the inside out. It comes in vivid shades of green and blue ranging from hues of emerald and turquoise to indigo and purple.

Paraiba Tourmaline was once believed to have powers guarding against misfortune. We think any woman owning a design made with this gemstone would be very lucky indeed!
