Among the most precious gemstones, the diamond and its surrounding industry extend throughout the world. Since the times of antiquity, diamonds have been renowned for their splendor, used as decoration and adornment. Today, the diamond industry has become well established and well known, from the popularity of the diamond engagement ring to the utility of diamonds as integral tools in electronics. This month, in anticipation of our upcoming Diamond Event
The diamond derives its name from the ancient Greek adámas: unbreakable. Aptly named, diamonds live out seemingly eternal lives as enduring precious stones. Only after rising up through volcanic eruptions or arriving to earth on the backs of meteors are they available to be mined. Today, the diamond mining industry stretches continents, with significant diamond deposits in the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Africa.
Though 49% of the world’s diamonds are currently supplied by Central and South Africa, more and more diamond deposits throughout the world are being identified for mining. The process is complex and delicate, despite the strength of diamonds, care must be taken to ensure that they are not harmed in the mining process. The diamond ore from kimberlite and lamproite volcanic pipes contain only a small fraction of actual diamonds. The ore is careful crushed and sorted by hand.
Since 1870, four and a half billion carats of diamond have been mined, and the industry only continues to grow. In this constantly advancing industry, we are proud to work with some of the world's finest diamond suppliers to create and promote beautiful diamond jewelry. Join us at McCaskill & Company for our Diamond Event November 21st-22nd, and look for The Diamond Part II: The Four C's, next week!
